I'm 30 weeks now and was wondering when is it a good idea to start washing the baby's clothes? I was thinking very soon since I have been soooo tired and suffering from lots of swelling.. I can't imagine how I'll feel weeks from now, but I'm not sure if it's too soon. The ones I will wash I would put in the drawers. Any input?When to start washing baby's clothes?
Wash them now if you want to. The more preparation you do ahead of time the better. My husband was giving me a hard time because I had my bag packed for the hospital two months early and had him set up the bassinette so early but then my baby came three weeks ahead of schedule! So it was actually good that I had done so much. Also, never underestimate the power of nesting! When you start feeling like you need to get things done, its a good sign the baby is coming soon. So follow your instincts.When to start washing baby's clothes?
nesting is a nice feeling, however I would not overestimate its ability to predict when your baby will be out :-). I'd wait and wash them about a month before you due date, it's more than enough... In the beginning, whe you are in the hospital, you don't need that much of baby stuff, as the hospital provides it for you, so in case you give birth earlier that 36 weeks, you will still have some clothes on hand...

Has it not occuired to manufacturers that Washing Clothes at lower temperatures is not Hygenic?
It occurred to me the other day that putting your clothes into a washing machine,on cool washes in order to save energy, and reduce your carbon footprint is not hygienic. Manufacturers are making machines that do lower and lower temperatures, as are the manufacturers of washing powders; but they are not taking into account a family wash split into loads of coloureds and whites. There must and is cross contamination with regard to say yeast infections, skin infections,fecal cross contamination, staphylococcal infections etc, etc.
Surely, unless we use an antibacterial agent in our washing machine at low temp under 60degC, then we are all costing our governments, and ourselves more money in treatments for the cross infection caused by low washing temperatures.The bleach agents put into washing powders do not work at lower temperatures, and therefore we are washing clothes and cross contaminating.!!

you are absolutely correct, i said this a while back. all my sheets and towels go on a 90 wash and its said that bed bugs and lice are making a comeback because of our wish to wash things at lower temperatures.
i think there is a huge issue too, about the balance of what is good or bad for the environment, which is better? the use of fuel to wash at higher temps or the use of highly chemical components to wash at lower temps (which have to be discarded somewhere along the line)

But I don't know if the hottest household water makes all that much difference with regards to bacteria. By that logic we should all be bathing in scalding hot water.
The main agent in removing harmful bacteria from our clothes and skin is soap. Soap makes it difficult for bacteria to adhere to things and so it falls off and goes down the drain.
Hot water is more helpful in removing stains from fabric because it softens things up, it's not for hygenic reasons.
Clothes aren't a very good medium for bacteria to grow on. Just like bacteria are more likely to grow on your skin than your toilet seat. Detergent is enough to take care of any contaminants that would actually end up on your clothes, because they won't keep multiplying. Unless you keep your clothes warm, wet, and in some type of animal fat broth. Also you should look for papers that have been published in more reputable journals. : )
well in culinary arts the tempature danger zone is 41 135. but i dont want to sidetrack off of anything. I dont know i just read what the lable says but, they wouldnt just make machines and stuff without researching, im sure its a loop hole somewhere so it can be hygenic. Afterall buisness needs its money.
A good idea would be to iron your clothes as soon as they are out from the dryer. Thats what i do. Here in India, we have 'istiwalas' who will knock on doors every evening when the washing is done %26amp; dry. Hand over your washing to them %26amp; in 1 hours time they return it neatly ironed %26amp; bacteria free.

You are so right, all this energy saving propaganda flies in the face of much previous evidence. I am particular about washing underwear (apart from delicate bras) at 50/60潞 depending on fabric type to kill any bacteria present.
i cant see washing at a low temp gets your clothes clean as for bleaches in soap powders i don't use them as they fade your cloths i will wash as i all ways have you can not cut corners in washing if you want it clean

Bleach does work at low temperatures- bleach is bleach regardless of what temperature it is used at. Cross contamination will occur in any wash cycle where there is not any bleach used. Good thing you have a nice hot dryer to put all of your clothes in to heat them up properly and kill any germs left on them. Another thing...antibacterial detergent...are you serious? Haven't you heard of the problems will all of these antibacterial products out there. 99.9% effective- even wonder about the last .1%, yeah that's the strong germs that are left behind to reproduce and create more strong germs that are resistant to all of your antibacterial products. Those germs then go on to create new super breeds, so on and so on.
I maybe wrong (frequently am) but unless you boil clothes it's all relative! I'm not for one minute suggesting that we should boil anything when washing - most clothes outside of cotton would be ruined if we did! Consequently lower temperatures and a good quality washing powder/liquid are all we have available to us. Antibacterial agents don't solve problems - bugs just become acclimatised to them. In the days when I was young we hand washed most things and as far as I'm aware my family didn't suffer as a result.

I am trying to buy a traditional clothes prop (the sort that props up a washing line) I live in Cornwall.?
I have had no luck trying to find the traditional type which has two parallel poles with holes through and a peg to push through the holes to hold it at the required height. I live in Cornwall so do not have a great choice of retailers, but if someone knows of a company who I can order from I would be glad to hear from them.

Well I lost the plastic peg thingy after about 1 week of stormy weather. I found it was a bit feeble for I had quite a weight of work wear clothes and blankets etc as regular wash day. I thought well what do I do next I asked my son who welds cars to help me perdiciment. Two minutes later he gave me the line-prom back alas with a simple jubilee clip whick costs less than 50 pence. It is now a terrific clothes-prop with fantastic height which my neighbours are envious off my clothes dry in no time so high up and the prop is very strong now after adjustments.

I check the pockets because I have found lots of money that way. Before I got married and washed my family's clothes, on of my brother's left over a hundred dollars in a pocket. I even gave both of them the opportunity to claim it, but he said it wasn't his. That was a great day. That was the most I ever found.
I check my husbands pockets because he usually leaves a pen or permanent marker in his pocket and it ends up ruining the load of laundry. I only had to learn that lesson once. And I was so mad because it was really nice clothes ruined. I would let him do some of the laundry but that was another lesson learned the hard way. my whites came out pink
because if we don't and just put your pants in the wash, the money or other important receipts that are in your pocket will get ruined and then you're obviously going to get angry right?!

IT's all a part of sorting luandry, otherwise u get little regrets later.
Because guys tend to leave change in their pockets and she wants to prevent damage to the washer, and because guys often leave used facial tissues (Kleenex, for one) in their pockets, which disintegrate when put through the wash, and leave the otherwise clean clothes covered with shreds of tissue that are a real pain in the butt to get off - sometimes the damn laundry has to be run through the washer twice because of his forgetfulness. And it isn't just a man problem - because I'm retired and my wife still works, I do the laundry - and dang if SHE don't continually leave tissues in HER pockets! Jeez, Louise!

Well mostly to see if you left any paper or kleenex in there so it wont get all over the other cloths . But I would go further and say its to find some evidence you been cheating on her like a note from a lover or a credit card reciept or a rubber.

Nothing bad about it as it prevents anything valuable, whether money or some important document from being washed or destroyed. Also, it might reveal some telltale evidences of the man's extra marital affairs, accidentally left in the pocket.

Well..from experience I can tell you that once I didn't check my husbands pants pockets before washing only to find out that he had left his paycheck in the back pocket. I caught hell for that one. So now I make sure I check all the pockets and sometimes get a nice surprise ($$$) and such. If you want to keep your secrets safe then make sure you do your own pocket checking before YOU do your own clothes washing.
I check his pockets to make sure i don't wash anything important. I once washed his paycheck because i didn't check his pant. Luckily his boss gave him another one.
At night I don't know before washing clothes so nothing gets ruined by the water. See a lot things get messed up if they get wet. Or maybe your girl thinks your a cheating piec of sh**.

I always check. Never know when one of the kids put a crayon in their pocket, or my husband left a pen in a jacket. I would rather take a couple seconds and check then ruin all that clothing. If you have something in your pockets you are trying to hide...maybe you should not be hiding it....or wash your own clothes!
I check my fiance's pockets because our dryer is brand new and top-of-the-line and he has the habit of leaving anything sticky, inky, and papery in his pockets.

Nails, bolts, screws, nuts, Busted Ink Pens, Wallet, ring, money, knives, screwdrivers etc etc
in the washing machine!
If he would empty his own pockets i wouldn't bother them, but until that time i am not going to try to get ink stains out of the clothes anymore!
Because rule of thumb is to check all pockets of clothing before washing them to prevent anything getting damaged in the wash. How would you like if you had gum or better a pen in your pocket and it wasnt checked prior to washing and messed up a pants or shirt of yours.

Well mostly to see if you left any paper or kleenex in there so it wont get all over the other cloths . But I would go further and say its to find some evidence you been cheating on her like a note from a lover or a credit card reciept or a rubber.

Nothing bad about it as it prevents anything valuable, whether money or some important document from being washed or destroyed. Also, it might reveal some telltale evidences of the man's extra marital affairs, accidentally left in the pocket.

Well..from experience I can tell you that once I didn't check my husbands pants pockets before washing only to find out that he had left his paycheck in the back pocket. I caught hell for that one. So now I make sure I check all the pockets and sometimes get a nice surprise ($$$) and such. If you want to keep your secrets safe then make sure you do your own pocket checking before YOU do your own clothes washing.
I check his pockets to make sure i don't wash anything important. I once washed his paycheck because i didn't check his pant. Luckily his boss gave him another one.
At night I don't know before washing clothes so nothing gets ruined by the water. See a lot things get messed up if they get wet. Or maybe your girl thinks your a cheating piec of sh**.

I always check. Never know when one of the kids put a crayon in their pocket, or my husband left a pen in a jacket. I would rather take a couple seconds and check then ruin all that clothing. If you have something in your pockets you are trying to hide...maybe you should not be hiding it....or wash your own clothes!
I check my fiance's pockets because our dryer is brand new and top-of-the-line and he has the habit of leaving anything sticky, inky, and papery in his pockets.

because pens in the washer and dryer is bad!!! guys tend to leave stuff in their pockets although I agree somewhat with the first answer, I don't check pockets or unroll socks, if you are too silly to empty your pockets or unwad clothing you have just taken off, it gets washed as is!!

I started checking his pockets when i started finding
Nails, bolts, screws, nuts, Busted Ink Pens, Wallet, ring, money, knives, screwdrivers etc etc
in the washing machine!
If he would empty his own pockets i wouldn't bother them, but until that time i am not going to try to get ink stains out of the clothes anymore!
Because rule of thumb is to check all pockets of clothing before washing them to prevent anything getting damaged in the wash. How would you like if you had gum or better a pen in your pocket and it wasnt checked prior to washing and messed up a pants or shirt of yours.
i told my husband when we first married that when i do his laundry, i will not check his pockets...it ends up in the dryer

First time on your own?
Unless you want pink underwear, t-shirts %26amp; dress shirts, make sure that your whites are washed separate from any colors except for blues.
A little blue tint coming off on your whites is actually a good thing. many fabric manufacturer's add a bluing agent to white fabric to give the illusion of brightness. I don't understand it completely but somehow it works.
aside from protecting your whites, you are good to go mixing mostly anything together if you're not fussy about undies being washed with your facecloths.
If you have darks ie socks and slacks and don't like to have them covered with lint it is advisable to not wash them with towels or light colored sweats as they will be covered in lint when you are done.
If you have to wear dress shirts but hate to iron, be ready to grab and hang your dress shirts while their still hot in the dryer. Or better yet, do what I do and only by 'perfectly pressed' shirts from Mark's Work Warehouse(in Canada only I think). they are the best wrinkle proof shirts you can get for under $60.00. you have to hunt for a good design/pattern but it's worth it.
Try to buy all of your socks in the same brand and color at the same time. this way you never have to pair them.
I left home at 14 and until I got married had been doing all my own laundry since I was 12. Most of the time I mixed everything together regardless of color but it didn't matter because I only bought second hand clothes back then and the risk of color transfer was fairly minimal with used clothing and most of my clothes were blue or white which were always fine to wash together.
Don't sweat it. if you are a guy, most of your clothes are virtually indestructible in the laundry. Girls however need to be more cautious of how they clean their clothes because many of the sweaters, skirts, blouses and undies are made of delicate fabrics that can be damaged by machine washers, hot water, detergents, or heat from the dryer.
Always read the tags on your clothing to see how to wash properly and don't buy clothes that say 'dry clean only' on the tags.

I've been browsing online for some cute tops lately, but I keep coming to the same conclusion, that 80% of them need to be hand washed.
For those of you who shop at places like Forever 21 where most of their clothes need to be hand washed, how do you wash them?
