I need to know how those poor people wash their clothes and how long a day they spend for?
How do people in Kandal province wash their clothes and how long does it take?
Here is one thing I could find on how they do it.
Traditional Khmer dress consists of a white shirt or blouse and a knee-
length sarong for men and sampot for women. In rural areas, farmers
generally wear baggy trousers and shirts to work the land. A long
checkered scarf, or krama, is often worn around the head. Today most
Khmer people wear Western-style pants and shirts, although traditional
clothing is still seen as well. Most Cambodians are conscious about their
appearance and take pride in the way they look and hence, time and
effort are put into washing and ironing clothes.
In rural Cambodia, the chore of washing clothes is generally done by women and
children, particularly young girls. The current practices of washing garments are very
labour intensive and involve beating or brushing the garments against rocks or cement.
Soap or commercially available laundry powder is mixed with water from rivers, lakes
or wells. After washing, used soapy water is discarded back into the environment
without treatment leading to high levels of phosphates in washing areas.
Problems associated with hand washing includes the high wear and tear on the
clothes, environmental degradation in washing areas, large cost due to overuse of
detergents and health issues related to directly handling detergents. A less labour
intensive method of washing could free up time for Cambodian villagers (particularly
women and children) to study or carry out income generating activities.
RDIC envision a mechanical (hand or foot powered) washing machine, which could be
shared amongst a number of households to distribute the cost and make it more
affordable
