Are you supposed to wash baby clothes before letting baby wear them? What detergent to use?

Arissa is only a day old but we waited until she was born to buy clothes and pretty much everything she needs.

So the question is,should we was store bought clothes before a newborn wears them? With what type of detergent? And do we have to wash socks/mittens that we have to use to keep her from scratching her face when she cries?

Thanks. Are you supposed to wash baby clothes before letting baby wear them? What detergent to use?
Yes, wash them all. You need to use a mild detergent. I use ALL Free and Clear, seeing as Dreft has fragrance that irritates my daughters skin.

Downy has a hypoallergenic fabric softner out, too, now.

Ohh, and use Clorox 2, the dye/fragrence free kind, it will keep all her little clothes looking brand new.Are you supposed to wash baby clothes before letting baby wear them? What detergent to use?
congratulations on becoming a daddy!!! :)

yes always wash store bought clothing before use, they have a lot of chemicals and starches that are too strong for infants skin.

You can use ANY laundry detergent, you don't need to buy special baby ones and you don't need to use detergents for senstitive skin UNLESS she has a reaction. Most babies use normal detergents just fine.

For the first wash, use the detergent as it says on the packaging. For all of the following washing of the item it's a good idea to use only a third of the detergent you'd usually use. This is enough to clean the fabric and make it hygenic again without waste. As baby doesn't get dirty or overly sweaty etc their clothes do not require as much detergent.

Also, instead of using fabric softener you can use white vinegar. It works the same but is A LOT cheaper and works as an extra ';detergent buster'; which is great too. Just fill the fabric softener section with the vinegar.

Yes wash the mittens and socks too - and everything baby will wear (even hats).

Have a wonderful time with Arissa :) and remember to take a photo of all her TINY little outfits and socks hanging on the line -- i love how the pegs are bigger then the socks --- so cute!
i wash EVERYTHING still before anyone in my fam uses them, so i would def say YES! just wash them in any detergent that doesn't have frag or dyes and u should be good; can use dreft if you want, but it kinda expensive in my opinion compared to how well it cleans clothes; higher price should equal better cleaning, but i think you are just paying for the name; don't get me wrong, it does ok cleaning, but unless u just love the smell, i would use something else....after a few months, wash one of baby's shirts, or onesies in the detergent you usually use and let them wear it, if they don't have a reaction, u should be fine to use your regular detergent....
Infants have very sensitive skin. Anything that comes in contact with their skin should be washed before using, including clothes, bedding, towels, and socks/mittens. Clothing has a sizing on it that helps keep it from becoming soiled in the lengthy process it takes getting from factory to your house. Many people touch those items, too. Washing removes the sizing as well as the dirt and germs clothing naturally have on them. The laundry soap you use is up to you. Some parents prefer a specific baby laundry product such as Dreft. However, it is more expensive and not a necessity. It is also perfectly acceptable to use one of the many products on the market that are dye and fragrance free. I am mom to 4. When my babies were newborns, I did use Dreft mostly because I like how it smells. However, as the babies grew and I was washing their clothes with the rest of the family, I used All Free and Clear, which we use because my husband has eczema.
I washed everything before hand because factories can be very dirty places and who knows what the clothing has come into contact with up to the point of you buying it. Plus clothing is softer after you wash it. I would use a detergent with no perfumes in it but there are also many detergents made specifically for baby's with minimal additives.
you always want to wash all clothes that are new as well as bath towes wash cloths sheets blankets socks and anything that baby will have touching their skin. the dies and chemicals used at the places where the stuff is made can irritate babys fragile skin

you can use the baby laundry detergent if you are one to use all the high end baby stuff but that stuff costs alot and you dont get much for your money

I buy one laundry detergent and use it for my whole family \\

i get the ALL FREE AND CLEAR Nin the white bottle

it has no scents or anything like that in it and i just buy one huge one and refil my smaller one and spend lots less than buying baby laundry soap
You do not ';technically'; have to. But its better that you do so your daughter does not have a reaction to the soap/softener! We use All Free and Clear. Its much cheaper then Dreft for babies. (almost half the price) You want to mainly look for unscented. since babies skin are really sensitive. My son is almost 3 months old and we plan on using the All Free and Clear from now on. He has not broken out from it. We also do not use softener, but use dryer balls!

And I would at least wash everything before your daughter uses it since they have chemicals that they use while packing and shipping!
Find a mild, perfume free soap to wash them in on the gentle cycle.

Always wash ANY clothes you buy from the store before wearing them; many of them are stored/sprayed with formaldehyde to keep moths and other insects from damaging them.
Wash everything. There are chemicals from the manufacturing process as well as dirt from transport and just being in the store. We washed all our baby's clothing in All Free %26amp; Clear. Much cheaper than the ';special'; baby detergent and works great.

CONGRATS!!!!
Please, wash everything! There are specially formulated detergents for children. Look for those hypoallergenic / free of dyes. I can only remember Dreft at the moment.
definitely wash everything. Use a dye and scent free gentle wash like ivory snow. If using fabric softener sheets in the dryer, use scent free.

Perfumes and dyes can irritate her skin.
YES, you should because there could be bacteria from the warehouse on any new clothes and children immune systems are not fully developed to fight off some diseases. I use Dreft but that is just me.
Yes and there is a special detergent for babys I don't know the name but it's says it on the bottle it's white and pink
i personally wash everything before the first wear. if grosses me out not too.

you can use dreft
