We wash our clothes all the time but often they have a stagnant smell in them, why? What can I do?

We hang them to dry, we hang them and dry them in the machine before they are dry, we put them directly in the dryer. We use fabric softener too!We wash our clothes all the time but often they have a stagnant smell in them, why? What can I do?
There may be smoke in the neighborhood, if not burning trash, tobacco or other recreational smoke, it might be vehicle smoke.

You might also just run the washer a few times with just clear water in it to clear it out more completely. It's hard to get all the water out of it. If you don't believe me, take the drain hose and lay it on the floor, then watch the left over rinse water siphon out in a bucket or tub. Smelly, isn't it?

Ask some of your friends what they wash with and how they like their results. All detergents aren't equal. We wash our clothes all the time but often they have a stagnant smell in them, why? What can I do?
Maybe its your detergent. Maybe thats just the way it smells or something. Only other reason would be that the room holds lots of moisture and humidity and the clothes are mildewing.
Yes, I agree either too long is washer and not long enough in dryer. Use some vinegar next time, with warm water....and alittle soap.
They are probably left in the washer too long after being washed,Hanging them should remove the smell if not add some borax to you wash with your detergent 1/2 cup. Will remove stale oders, but remove from the washer as soon as it quits and dry or hang outside, inside drying takes too long and clothes go stale.
I have had this happen, too, and I have no idea why. What helps is adding a cup of baking soda to the wash water and a cup of vinegar to the rinse. You can also purchase Febreze for laundry at Wal*Mart. This is the only place I have seen it.
Try some eucalyptus or lavender oil in the rinse cycle, and make sure that your clothes are completely dry.
